Surgery is the last resort for the treatment of epileptic patients. Elekta developed brain imaging technologies (MEG) to support the critical decision about which parts of the brain to remove.
FLO was asked to analyse and improve the workflow and to design and test entirely new UI concepts. Goal was to drastically reduce the learning curve and the lead time for the epileptic analysis.
In co-creation with lead users we developed a new UI concept that significantly simplified the way of working. The numerous windows of the old approach have been reduced to just one, with strong visual support of the intended flow.
The results were presented at a leading conference and evaluated in focus group sessions, with great success. Various aspects of the concept are currently being implemented.

Context
The learning curve for mastering the old MEG system was steep. You had to be a neurologist, physicist, and computer scientist at the same time. It took between four hours and a few days to process a single patient case. Hence, the adoption rate of this promising technology remained low.
Our challenge was to support the user in processing large amounts of waveform data. Next, the user needed help to sort this data and to verify the underlying assumptions utilizing statistical and anatomical evidence.
After a deep orientation in the domain, we conducted reviews at six hospitals (EU/US), and held various co-creation sessions with specialists.
Impact
Various practices and tools exist in the community, partially maintained by their technical complication, and persistent because of professional dogma. By demonstrating a new user experience concept we have been able to get buy-in for one streamlined approach.
Our work has provided a foundation upon which the current system is being developed, and more importantly we have been able to help Elekta find the confidence to pursue and invest in MEG technology, exploring its wider application.
“We very much enjoyed the energy and professionalism that FLO brought to our exploration project and to our team, and our expectations were fully met or exceeded as to the level of innovativeness that the exploration reached.
Working with FLO has also helped us significantly simplify our thinking with regards to the design of our complex product.”
