Following its initial launch the Uppleva home entertainment system had not been the success IKEA had hoped for. With our extensive experience of consumer electronics we were asked to fix its problems and redesign the second generation product.
We were also tasked with creating a roadmap and conceptual design study envision the future of the range.
In addition to designing the user interface and remote control we also facilitated the implementation of the product with the supplier.
The new designs are in line again with IKEA’s brand and the system has been sold in a large number of countries as part of the BESTA furniture range.

Context
A collection of off-the-shelf components, connected by a design concept (no matter how innovative) cannot guarantee an experience. Especially when the experience it needs to reflect is that of IKEA.
Thoroughly testing and visualizing the experience flow of the existing product meant that we could point directly at the areas that were underperforming or needed to be changed.
Working closely with suppliers we fixed the issues and delivered a roadmap for IKEA.
impact
We proposed that IKEA should align the behavior of products with their own simple-to-follow, self build approach. Focusing on building blocks we simplified installation and created an approach that allowed the user to add media streams and customize the experience, without the un-wanted extras that often get packaged together.
Its fair to say that IKEA re-evaluated their first foray into consumer electronics, and we are proud to have been able to help them envision a future, and fix the present.
“...FLO helped us to bring the experience of controlling your TV and sound system back to human levels of simplicity and intuitiveness, fully in line with the IKEA brand ...”

The iconic remote control was the result of ‘less is more’ system design principles. We had to overcome reluctance from the Chinese supplier who believed that innovation was about adding more features.
We would love to hear about your project, let's have a cup of coffee and connect.
