Industrial cleaning and facility management are benefitting from smart building technology. Heijmans asked FLO interactive to design and develop an app for their new venture BeSense. The first release targeted specifically the cleaning industry for BeSense partner CSU. The app gives the cleaning staff the ability to view work schedules and report issues.

Piloted in a large facility in The Hague, the application has been well received by the market, and by users, who appreciate its ease of use.

Context

Making the Internet of Things useful to our daily life activities is a continuous journey of discoveries. Making good use of all the sensor technology in more ways than to control temperature and lighting was the challenge Heijmans set for themselves. With their partner CSU they found one in the cleaning industry.

 

From a User point of view, the cleaning industry poses new challenges. Due to the nature of the work staff do not use PC's, nor have time for complex reporting, and are often less literate or non- native Dutch. This means the UI had to be intuitive and language independent

Impact

The potential for further functionality based on this smart building sensor technology will be the basis of our future collaboration with Heijmans.

From the start of the development of our solution it was clear that we needed experience and expertise on user oriented design. Part of our solution helps cleaning staff focus (by use of a tablet), their attention on areas which need more cleaning. Not only is the use of an app to assist in cleaning new, but many cleaners have never used a tablet before.

FLO had the difficult task to design a user experience for these users, which had different levels of user experience with tablets. They succeeded with flying colors in this task. Feedback we got was “I feel more important now, because my feedback is used”. What else do you want to hear for feedback?​‌”
