Upgrading an existing and thoroughly embedded product interface is an intimidating proposition. FLO interactive were asked to look into the workflow of operators and technicians tasked with programming and servicing single or multiple devices.

Clear and timely indication of service requirements, combined with a need for predictive planning/scheduling, to optimize and streamline the production process, all pointed toward a more modular, task oriented experience.

Results

Resource issues resulting from the pandemic have put development and implementation on hold. We hope to be able to continue design and development in the future.

Context

Additive Industries is a 3D metal printer manufacturer for high-quality metal parts. It offers a system specifically aimed at high-end and demanding industrial markets. With class-leading build volume, robustness as well as productivity. Active in aerospace, automotive, energy and high-tech equipment, Additive is a global key player in large volume metal printing systems.

Very much based on a proprietary platform, the existing control and planning interface is struggling to keep pace with the immediate demands of production. By analysing workflow we can prioritise information and relegate detail to more appropriate ‘on demand’ locations.

Impact

The use of “tiles” that open consistent contextual panels, enables a speed of response to any given situation. From a modular perspective larger configurations can be catered for and are dealt with in an intuitive manner that does not complicate operation.

As with most system updates, the operators will need time and support to familiarise themselves, but a prototype has already indicated that day-to-day operation and monitoring is better facilitated, and the bold look is immediately ‘glance-able’, allowing clear prioritization on the production floor.
